Where to Stay
On the rocky fringes of the village of Urgup, Esbelli House is a pension occupying a cluster of houses typical of the region-the place to try the troglodyte experience in comfort. From the outside the carved stone facades look grand. The upper rooms with barrel vaulted ceilings furnished in traditional Turkish style, are robustly elegant; go down to the bedrooms and you are in a honeycomb of caves burrowed into the hills. One bedroom has walls striated like smooth nougat, while another melts into the hillside.
Suha Ersoz bought this house about ten years ago, originally intending to use it as a holiday home, but then decided to turn it into a guest house. There's no restaurant but a breakfast room where you can help yourself to delicious jams, honeys and drinks. In a landscape already invaded by hotels, Esbelli House is an example of how things can be done.
